Epcot International Food and Wine Festival invited our small boutique winery to participate in the 2014 festival. Everyone that knows us and our family winery, understands that we takes enormous pride in handcrafting small batches Massachusetts apple ice wine. Yet despite our small size, we caught the attention of Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center and accepted the invitation to participate and proudly share center stage with big boy industry wineries like Robert Mondavi and Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy.
Sharing Epcot’s Elite Wine List with Industry Leaders
With The American Adventure as our backdrop, The Block & Hans Pavilion at Epcot sold Still River Winery’s apple ice wine by the glass to packed crowds. It was quite a moment for Still River Winery to be standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the world’s largest wineries!
Sharing the elite wine list with Still River Winery was: Mondavi Winery [purchased by Constellation Brands in 2004 for $1 billion], Great American Wines [owned by Rosenblum Cellars, which is part of Diageo, the largest liquor company in the world], and Domaine Chandon [a subsidiary of Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy]. There at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center, with an audience of about 200,000 weekly festival visitors, Still River Winery was an equal with some of the biggest players in the wine industry.
Still River Winery Hosted Popular Wine Seminars ay Epcot
During the festival, Wade and Margot gave a series of wine seminars, educating visitors on the process of making Apfel Eis, their Massachusetts Apple Ice Wine. Lecture rooms were filled with eager listeners and those wanting to sample the signature cocktails we custom created for this event. These specialty drinks included Apple Ice Wine Spritzer (made by marinating fruit in Apfel Eis and combining that fruit with more wine & lemon seltzer) and a Caramel Apple Cocktail (Apfel Eis with caramel vodka, served in a glass rimmed with brown sugar).
Epcot Applause Reinforced our Passion for Making Massachusetts Apple Ice Wine
Epcot International Food and Wine Festival was a great experience for Still River Winery. We throughly enjoyed the recognition we received, and were delighted by the uproarious applause that followed our talks. We also took pride in accommodating the many festival visitors that approached us to sign bottles of our apple ice wine. We look forward to participating in the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival again!
Applewood Ale by Still River Winery
Still River Winery makes a beer???
We have always prided ourselves on making Apfel Eis, apple ice wine – our one and only one wine – perfected. So why are we making a beer?
Wade Holtzman, owner and winemaker, has been brewing beer for friends and family long before he started making Apfel Eis. He tried many recipes using various malted barley and wheat grains, as well as experimenting with assorted types of yeast.
Last fall he was finally satisfied with Recipe #26 – an ale with a notably smoky flavor, distinct hop bitterness, and a delicate sweetness delivered from the apple taste in the background. We named it Applewood Ale because Wade uses malted barley smoked with our apple wood, the apple water remaining after the freezing and thawing we use to make our ice wine, as well as cascade hops we grow in our hop yard.
The delicious result is farm-style Rauchbier ale and 6% abv. This beer is absolutely fantastic served with ribs, barbecued chicken, smoked salmon, Roquefort or blue cheese.
Why drink the same boring beer?!!
Special orders for Applewood Ale are accommodated year round. If you’d like to place an order, give us a call. And if you’re just curious what Applewood Ale tastes like, stop by the winery (call first to make sure we’re around: 978-415-9463) and we will be happy to pour you a glass!
Rescue Dogs of Still River Winery
When you come to Still River Winery, get ready to meet our furry friends!
Rescue Dog Nali
Nali is a 10-year black lab rescue dog from California who flew in to join our team last winter. She greets customers with her friendly manner and exuberant tail wagging. Here she is taking a relaxing break next to the carboys. We love the way her eyes match the hue of the wine at this stage of the fermentation process. Nali is a gentle soul and quite at home at the winery.
Rescue Dog Totle
Totle, short for Aristotle, arrived from down south and has been a member of the Still River Winery for more than 10 years. Totle loves playing with all the children that visit the winery with their parents. Kids delight in playing fetch and frolicking in the backyard while parents take a tour of the operation inside to learn about how we make apple ice wine.
Rescue Dog Elly
Elly is our southern belle and shy by nature. She must have been a yogi in a former life, because she is an observer through and through. When visitors arrive at the winery, she hangs back or retreats completely. She is happiest watching the excitement unfold from afar. When the winery is quiet, she moseys about watching Wade at work and keeps me company while I keep pace with the paperwork. She is a wonderful companion to all that get to know her.
